Captain Milton (Mickey) Brelsford is a life long resident of Miami-Dade County and has resided in the Homestead area for the last 30 years. Captain Mickey has over 40 years experience, fishing, diving, and boating on the waters of South Florida including Biscayne Bay, Florida Bay, White Water Bay, Flamingo, the Gulf Stream, Everglades and Biscayne National Parks and the Florida Keys. Captain Mickey has fished the South West Florida coast for the last 8 years both off and inshore waters, including Pine Island Sound, Sanibel and Captiva Islands, and Boca Grand Pass, from Saint James City, Florida located on the southern tip of Pine Island. Captain Mickey is a certified International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Captain and a permitted National Park Guide.
In April 2004, Captain Mickey concluded a 30 year law enforcement career and retired as a Police Lieutenant from the Miami-Dade Police Department. During his tenure he served in road patrol and as a detective in the Missing Persons and Economic Crime Units, and as a Detective Sergeant in the Agriculture and General Investigations Units, and as a Unit Commander of the General Investigations Unit for the Doral and Cutler Ridge Districts. Captain Mickey also served as a Platoon Commander and as the Administrative Lieutenant in the Doral District. In this capacity he was designated as the Department's Hurricane Planning coordinator to standardize planning for eight police districts. In 1997 a career long dream was realized when Captain Mickey was appointed to Command the Miami-Dade Police Department's Marine Patrol Unit, where he was responsible for setting marine enforcement policy, interacting with other agencies, budget and fleet management, vessel selection, deployment of marine patrol officers and police divers, and was cross designated as a United States Customs and Immigration officer to cover Federal marine jurisdiction. Captain Mickey is a certified police diver, who is very familiar with the protocols of this science. His operations area consisted of a 60 mile coastline up to 12 miles off shore, local waterways, several major ocean inlets, and cities of Miami, Miami Beach and Key Biscayne, ports of the Miami River and Miami, and Biscayne National Park. The operations area is one of the busiest in the nation and presented major challenges, including the planning and implementation of marine deployment for the Free Trade Area of the Americas Summit in November of 2003, the annual Columbus Day Regatta, a three day gathering of over 1500 vessels to celebrate a sail boat race with a 50 year tradition, recovery of deceased divers from artificial reefs, cruise ship fires and explosions, plane crashes, hi-jacked vessels from other countries, and the response to the never ending flow of desperate persons to US shores on less than seaworthy vessels. Upon the September 11 attacks Captain Mickey worked together with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and numerous marine law enforcement agencies to develop port security procedures and responses Ports of Miami and the Miami River.
During his tenure, Captain Mickey was recognized by his own department as well as received commendations by numerous local, state, and federal marine enforcement agencies including: the USCG by Public Service Commendation from Rear Admiral H. E. Johnson Jr., presentation of the 7th District and Group Miami Commanders coins, and the Hall of Justice Award from Station Miami; the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Florida Fish and Wild Life Conservation Commission, the National Park Service, the National Association of Counties for "Operation Cruise Safe" (an escort program for cruise ships departing the Port of Miami prior to September 11 attacks that were immediately adopted as the national standard on September 11, for vessel protection in and out of ports); and the Miami-Dade County Commission for development and implementation of marine security policies and procedures as a result of September 11.
Upon Captain Mickey's retirement, Tailer Jailer Charters and Marine Consulting was born as Captain Mickey continued to pursue a life long passion of fishing and boating. Captain Mickey is highly experienced both off and inshore and is very flexible to helping you plan a great outing, be it fishing, cruising, sight seeing, captain's services, or instruction in area familiarization, using your boat and electronics. Captain Mickey has operated and maintained all makes and types of vessels up to 55 feet long in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, California, and Louisiana, including inboard gas and diesel, inboard out board, outboard and jet drive. Due to numerous inquires and requests for professional review and opinions regarding a variety of marine related topics, consulting services were included as part of the business. Captain Mickey has provided camera boat services for fishing show production, consulted on vessel design for government and recreational vessels; has represented various vessel manufacturers at boat shows for both recreational and government products, has consulted with marine engine manufacturers regarding government sales, has attended both boat shows and marine manufacturing shows on behalf of clients in search of new ideas and products preparing samples and reports, has served as a local vessel manager and contact representative for out of town companies, has professionally tied down vessels stored in the water for hurricane impact at the dock, has reviewed criminal marine enforcement cases and rendered opinions for the legal profession, has reviewed boating accidents with and without fatalities for professional opinions to be used in court and provided opinions and insights regarding a diversity of marine topics.
Captain Mickey is a highly respected, experienced, and professional member of the marine community who by his wide exposure to a variety of marine related topics and experience is able to offer unique services and insights to the angler, the boating public, the marine industry, marine law enforcement, and the legal and insurance professions.
